The Program supports several categories of Research projects:
  • Faculty and student research and study
  • Lectures, seminars, symposia, & conferences
  • Faculty/staff development
  • Collaborative faculty, student research
  • Dissertation research
  • Network development
Grants are considered on an individual and year-to-year basis. Depending on the availability of funds, mini-grants of up to $4000 are awarded for faculty/student research, seed projects, network development, and dissertation research. Due to fiscal requirements, all travel, and activities must be completed by June 30, 2009.

Award recipients must file a written report with the CUNY-Caribbean Exchange Program office within thirty days of the project's termination date. Any announcement, program, or publication resulting from activities or research supported by this Program must acknowledge the CUNY-Caribbean Exchange Program. The Program will consider proposals which:
  • Seek the advancement of academic institutions and programs and the strengthening of institutional links.
  • Foster an ongoing dialogue between scholars and students in CUNY and the Caribbean.
  • Develop short and long-term research projects and programs that contribute to an enhanced mutual understanding of culture and scholarship.
  • Implement joint workshops, seminars, lectures, and other types of activities that address current issues of interest and concern to CUNY and Caribbean faculty and students.
  • Strengthen the network of CUNY faculty and students whose research and professional interest focus on the Caribbean region.
  • Advance the field of Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and Caribbean Studies (depending on the specific grant).
Priority will be given to applicants seeking to develop or strengthen institutional links (i.e. working with a university department/school or a research center on a particular project), and to those working collaboratively with researchers and students in the Caribbean. A small amount of funds will be allocated for proposals for individual research.

CUNY graduate students, especially those engaged in dissertation research, are eligible. Faculties at CUNY colleges are advised to apply to supplementary funding sources, such as PSC-CUNY, for projects of an individual nature.

We will be holding three competitions this year (2008-2009). Applications for each are found underneath the description in PDF format

- Puerto Rican Diaspora Grants Pre-application Deadline: May 23, 2008

The program will also support grants specifically addressing the Puerto Rican Diaspora to the United States and other Caribbean nations. While projects can focus on the Diaspora in any of these areas, we are especially interested in topics related to the Puerto Rican Diaspora to other parts of the Caribbean.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century there began a working class/agricultural labor exodus from Puerto Rico to nearby Caribbean locations due to deteriorating living conditions on the island and acute labor demand abroad. This was a precursor to the massive migration of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s to the U.S. These later migrations to most notably, New York, then Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and other cities of the mainland are well known and to some extent variously documented. What are not well known and hardly documented are the Puerto Rican migrations to other Caribbean Islands, in particular, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and St. Croix. El Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños is now embarking on small projects to fill this historical gap. Its Caribbean Exchange Program is supporting research in this area by building our historical archives and a social history of these migrations through documentation efforts and via oral history. Through the work of the descendants themselves, graduate students and faculty, from both the Centro and the island countries, we hope to build an archive preserving this experience. The results of this effort to have the potential to make a significant and unique contribution to our knowledge of the international aspects of the Puerto Rican Diaspora.

- General Grants

The CUNY-Caribbean Exchange Program supports the exchange of faculty, researchers, and graduate students between City University of New York and academic, research and cultural institutions in the Caribbean. The program is thus issuing a call for proposals for projects related to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and other Caribbean nations. These grants are considered on a rolling basis and are considered "General Grants.

Priority will be given to applicants seeking to develop or strengthen institutional links (i.e. working with a university department/school or a research center on a particular project), and to those working collaboratively with researchers and students in the Caribbean. A small amount of funds will be allocated for proposals for individual research.
