Centro Events
Request for Proposals

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro) seeks proposals for cultural and educational activities that contribute to our core mission, the study and interpretation of the Puerto Rican experience in the United States. We will give priority to activities that are useful to those in community organizations, public policy and academia.

Centro sponsors and co-sponsors events every semester related to the Puerto Rican experience in New York City and the United States. Our speaker forums focus on scholarship in the social sciences, humanities, and performance arts. Centro Graphics Collection exhibits feature the work of Puerto Rican and Latino artists, located in our library on the 3rd floor of Hunter College’s East building. Those interested can sign up on Centro’s website http://www.centropr.org/member.html to receive updates on Centro events, which are free and open to the public.

Currently, Centro Events are organized under the following thematic areas:

The Barrios Series — Portraits of specific neighborhoods, their architecture, commerce, communitybased organizations, and the impact of social change in each community.

Legacy Series — Conversations celebrating individual “pioneers” who broke new ground in their communities, organizations, public service, arts, and the media. Many of the participants have graciously donated their papers to the Centro Archives. The series will take place in the intimate setting of the Centro Library and Archives.

Research Seminar — Graduate students and faculty to present research-in-progress and receive feedback from the public. Working papers will be made available through our website.

Meet The Author — Events celebrating book releases or recent publications that, contribute to Puerto Rican studies.

Student Initiatives — Opportunity for young scholars to present their work and to explore emerging topics in Puerto Rican Studies.

Special Events — Events celebrating Puerto Rican Heritage Month and/or milestones reached by members and community based organizations.

Film Corner — Forum examining Puerto Rican films while introducing new works, artists and producers.

Exhibits—Displays of graphic arts, photos, and other historical documents high lining a collection or a topic.

Centro Events
Proposal Guidelines
Submission Deadlines: October 15 – for Spring semester events
June 15 – for Fall semester events

Proposal Requirements:

  • Proposal must be in concert with Centro’s mission and fall within one of the thematic areas mentioned above.
  • A budget estimate and funding source must be included. Although there are limited financial resources, the Centro usually covers overhead expenses related to the venue, small receptions, and travel reimbursements. Regrettably, we are not in a position to offer honoraria.
  • The proposal will be evaluated based on various factors such as, overall feasibility of accommodations and Centro’s available resources. Cost sharing of expenses is strongly recommended.
  • A copy of all the materials/videos/films/books presented at Centro Events will be donated to the Centro Library and Archives collection.
  • Following university guidelines, Centro events cannot sponsor events geared to support political parties or candidates or for the fundraising activities of other organizations and/or individuals.

Centro Events are scheduled approximately 2-6 months in advance. Please submit your proposal form and any additional documents to:
